First introduced in 1964 as a high-quality student model, the Fender Mustang defied its entry-level origins to become one of the most culturally significant offset guitars in history, famously driving the alternative and grunge revolutions of the 1990s. This 1978 example is a superb representation of the late-CBS era, boasting a killer, aggressive aesthetic and plenty of authentic rock-and-roll pedigree.
Finished in a timeless high-gloss Black, this Mustang features a matching multi-ply black pickguard, creating a sleek layout that contrasts beautifully with a pair of naturally aged, cream-colored single-coil pickups. Controlled by individual three-position slider switches, the electronics offer the standard pickup combinations alongside the Mustang’s famous out-of-phase setting—delivering a thin, hollow, and wirey funk bark that slices right through a mix. This is anchored by the innovative Fender Dynamic Vibrato bridge, which provides a unique, slinky tremolo response.
The Maple neck features a comfortable, round '70s "C" profile paired with a fast, compact 24" short scale length. This shorter scale reduces string tension, making string bends effortless and chord shapes incredibly accessible. It is capped with a dark Rosewood fingerboard featuring vintage-style dot inlays, a 7.25" radius, and the iconic oversized CBS-era headstock equipped with original chrome "F-stamped" enclosed tuners.
As seen in the photos, this 1978 model is a true players' guitar with immense character. The body shows typical signs of an active musical life, including light handling marks, surface scratches, and edge wear, but remains structurally perfect and free of modifications. The original frets have plenty of life left, the neck is straight, and the electronics function cleanly.
