For many Gibson Custom Shop purists and collectors, the year 2003 represents a high-water mark for the Historic Reissue series. It was during this specific production year that Gibson made massive strides toward total vintage accuracy, introducing a historically correct non-tubed truss rod and a deeper, more accurate top carve. This superb 2003 "R7" '57 Reissue captures the raw power and striking elegance of the definitive mid-fifties Goldtop.
Built to legendary 1957 specifications, this guitar features a solid Mahogany body with no weight relief, capped with a carved Maple top. The iconic Bullion Gold finish is beautifully applied, catching the light with the perfect metallic hue that vintage enthusiasts crave. The solid Mahogany neck features a substantial, period-correct '57 rounded profile that feels exceptionally stable in the hand, paired with a gorgeous, dark Rosewood fingerboard adorned with aged cellulose nitrate trapezoid inlays.
Sonically, this R7 is a force to be reckoned with. It is equipped with a pair of original Gibson Custom Bucker or BurstBucker humbuckers that perfectly replicate the bite, clarity, and woody compression of original PAFs. From creamy, singing neck sustain to aggressive, percussive bridge bite, it handles driven tube amps effortlessly.
As seen in the photos, this 2003 example is in fantastic condition, showing only very light, honest play wear and minor surface marks that are entirely consistent with a carefully handled 23-year-old Custom Shop instrument. The nickel hardware has developed a lovely, subtle patina that enhances its authentic vintage aesthetic.
This guitar has been given a full service by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 2 year warranty.
