Introduced in the early 1970s, the Fender Telecaster Custom was designed as a more powerful evolution of the traditional Telecaster, pairing classic Fender single coil design with a Seth Lover designed Wide Range humbucker in the neck position. This combination gave the model a broader tonal palette while retaining the cutting bridge pickup bite that defined the original Telecaster, making it a popular choice during a period when players were increasingly seeking higher output instruments.
This 1974 Fender Telecaster Custom is finished in natural with a black pickguard and remains largely original throughout, accompanied by its original case. The instrument is internally and externally correct aside from added cavity shielding and a replacement nut, with both original pickups untouched and fully intact. Potentiometer codes date to late 1973 and early 1974, confirming period correct components. The finish shows light play wear and a gentle yellowing with age, alongside lacquer checking most notably on the headstock face. A well preserved example of one of Fender’s most distinctive 1970s Telecaster variants, offering original specification and authentic period character.
