The Gibson Les Paul Deluxe was introduced in 1969 as part of the company’s return to the classic 1950s single cutaway design, notable for its use of mini humbuckers adapted from earlier Epiphone “New York” pickups. Although it did not initially achieve the same popularity as the Les Paul Custom of the period, the Deluxe has since become well regarded for its distinctive tonal character and its place in the early 1970s Gibson lineup. This 1972 Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop is a strong example from the era, finished in the model’s most recognisable and sought after colour.
Constructed with a mahogany pancake body, a matching mahogany neck, and a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid block inlays, it follows the typical construction features associated with early 1970s Les Pauls. The factory mini humbuckers provide a brighter and more defined response than full size humbuckers while still retaining warmth and punch, giving the Deluxe its characteristic voice. They are also fitted with the embossed logo pickup covers used on Gibson electric guitars during 1972.
This guitar is in exceptionally clean condition, with very little play wear to speak of. The Gold lacquer finish is in good condition and has not suffered from the finish turning slightly green as happens with some examples when excessively worn. This guitar is internally and externally original, with, the exception of the bridge, which is a later Nashville style. The Pat No. mini humbuckers, tuners and all other hardware are original and correct. The original pots date to 1972, with the full codes obscured by solder.
There has been some minor fretboard separation repaired as can be seen in the pictures, and there also appears to be glue residue to the rear of the headstock near the serial number and volute, although there is no evidence of a repair. This guitar also includes a non original case.
