Originally introduced in the mid-1960s as Fender’s top student model, the Mustang quickly won favour with players for its short scale comfort and distinctive tonal character, partly thanks to the unique pickup phase switching found only on this model. This 1972 Competition Red Mustang comes from the later years of the Competition series and features the iconic racing stripe design that makes these guitars so instantly recognisable.
Offered in Red, Orange, and Blue (listed as Burgundy in Fender catalogues), the Competition Red finish on this guitar has retained a lot of its vibrance, as opposed to other examples which can fade over time.
Cosmetically it shows surface play wear and plenty of lacquer checking. The neck remains comfortable with frets in good shape. The guard has warped a bit on the treble side.
The guitar is internally and externally 100% original and retains its original case.
