Manufactured in Älvdalen, Sweden, during the golden era of European guitar building, Hagstrom instruments have long enjoyed a cult following for their quirky design choices and remarkable structural longevity. The BJ-12 (often cataloged as the H-33 or Bjärton-built model) is widely considered one of the best affordable vintage 12-strings, legendary for delivering a massive wall of acoustic shimmer without the structural headaches common to vintage 12-string acoustics.

The secret hidden inside this BJ-12, is Hagstrom's patented H-Expander truss rod. Originally adapted from aviation engineering, this rigid aluminium extrusion runs the full length of the neck, offering unparalleled resistance against the immense tension of twelve strings. Because of this innovative design, the slim, electric-feeling mahogany neck remains perfectly straight and stable decades later, offering an incredibly low, fast, and effortless playing action that is a rare luxury for an acoustic 12-string of this vintage.

Constructed with a solid Spruce top and nicely grained mahogany back and sides, this dreadnought-sized instrument produces a spectacularly bright, orchestral, and percussive chorus effect. Unlike traditional pin-bridge acoustics, the BJ-12 utilizes a floating adjustable rosewood bridge assembly paired with a heavy-duty chrome trapeze tailpiece featuring the iconic red-and-silver Hagstrom crest. This setup forces string vibration directly onto the top, providing excellent string-to-string definition and a punchy, mid-range clarity that cuts through a mix with ease.

As seen in the photos, this 1970s example is in wonderful, honest vintage condition. The vibrant Sunburst finish has aged beautifully, displaying typical lacquer sinking, minor edge wear, and faint surface scratches that add immensely to its authentic European charm. The dark rosewood fingerboard is clean, the original open-gear 6-on-a-plate strip tuners hold pitch reliably, and the metal shield-style neck joint plate is secure.

This guitar has been given a full service and appraisal by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 1 year warranty.
