Introduced in 1937, the Gibson J-200 quickly established itself as the company's flagship flat top acoustic, renowned for its powerful voice, ornate styling and commanding stage presence. Favoured by generations of professional musicians, the model has remained one of the most iconic acoustic guitars ever produced. By the mid 1960s the J-200 retained its distinctive Super Jumbo body shape and elaborate appointments, while Gibson also began offering a range of custom order options, allowing customers to specify finishes and features outside the standard catalogue.

This 1967 Gibson J-200 is an exceptionally rare custom order example, finished with a striking red lacquered spruce top unlike any standard production model of the period. Reminiscent of the Cardinal Red custom colour introduced by Gibson during the mid 1960s, this unusual finish is believed to be one of only two known examples, with the only other documented guitar residing in the collection of a well known collector in the US. Aside from its extraordinary finish, the guitar remains true to the period specification and has recently been returned to factory correct playing condition. It arrived fitted with a non original fixed saddle, which has since been replaced with the correct adjustable ABR-1 bridge complete with custom made vintage correct height adjustment screws. A remarkable and highly collectible custom order Gibson, representing one of the rarest variations of the legendary J-200.
