Like Silvertone and Harmony guitars of the same era, Danelectro instruments from the late 1950s and 1960s have developed a cult following, prized for their unmistakable tones and distinctive mid century American styling. Built in Neptune, New Jersey, they were designed as affordable, inventive instruments that delivered a unique voice all of their own, and they remain highly sought after by players looking for something unconventional and characterful.
This 1959 Danelectro Model 4021 is a rare and intriguing example from the company’s late '50s period, retaining the lightweight semi hollow construction using masonite and pine that defines the classic Danelectro sound. It features a poplar neck with rosewood fingerboard and a comfortable, familiar vintage profile, paired with the company’s signature single lipstick pickup which delivers everything from gritty, slightly overdriven bite to warm, rounded clean tones. The factory 'Hand Vibrato' system is present, using Danelectro’s inventive spring loaded bridge design to allow subtle pitch modulation, a simple but effective solution that captures the surf inspired spirit of the period. The electronics remain original, with potentiometer date codes reading 137924, confirming period correct components. Finished in black lacquer and showing clear signs of honest play wear, this is a well preserved and characterful example.
