The Fender Duo Sonic, introduced in 1956 alongside the single pickup Musicmaster model, was the company's designated twin pickup student guitar, with a shorter 22 1/2" scale length and a stripped back design. The Duo Sonic's shorter scale design and typically Fender single coil pickup setup have made it a popular choice over the years, as well as a relatively inexpensive introduction to vintage guitars from Fender's golden era.
This 1963 Duo Sonic is a great representation of the model's initial design, prior to changes in 1964 that brought it closer to the style of the Mustang. This guitar has a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, and a slab Alder body. The neck heel bares an 'A' mark denoting a narrower nut width than usual, along with a Jan '63 ink date stamp. The narrower nut width makes this guitar particularly comfortable to play. The instrument still has its original black bottom pickups and pots dating to the 5th week of 1963. This guitar has been professionally refinished in Sonic Blue, and features a newer pickguard. It looks to have also been previously drilled for a string-through-body setup, which is slightly visible under the refinish.
As with all vintage instruments, this 1963 Fender Duo Sonic has been given a full service and appraisal by the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 3 year warranty.
