If it wasn't for the Beatles connection, I suspect Epiphone acoustics of the 1960s would be even more obscure than they are when compared to their Gibson counterparts. But really, who wouldn't want a guitar called a Texan rather than a J-45? Built in the same factory as Gibson acoustics of the period, these Epiphones share much of the same DNA, while the subtle differences in their design and their own distinctive model names have earned them a following in their own right.

The Texan was Epiphone's take on Gibson's J-45, with a round shouldered body, spruce top and mahogany back and sides. It's a straightforward, no nonsense design, and one that makes a lot of sense when you spend some time playing one. The neck on this 1963 example sits towards the slimmer and narrower end of the scale, which might not suit everyone, particularly those who spend a lot of time fingerpicking. Strum it with a pick, though, and you get that big, open sound that makes these guitars such good companions for a singer songwriter. There's a lovely sense of space to the sound, with enough presence to sit comfortably behind a vocal without becoming overbearing.

The Texan has become particularly well known through players like Paul McCartney and Graham Nash, and it's easy to see the appeal. The shaded sunburst finish, parallelogram fingerboard inlays and distinctive Epiphone pickguard give it a character of its own, even if the underlying design will feel familiar to anyone who has played a Gibson round shoulder acoustic. It's a guitar that doesn't need to do anything particularly clever to make sense. If you're looking for a vintage acoustic to write songs with, play open chords on and generally spend a lot of time with, the Texan makes a very convincing case for itself.

This example is finished in sunburst and has some minor crack repairs, along with a reglued brace. It comes with a non original case. These details are worth bearing in mind, but the Texan remains an appealing option for anyone after the sound and feel of a vintage Gibson made acoustic with a little more Epiphone character.
