Introduced in 1951, the Fender Precision Bass was the first solid body electric bass guitar ever produced, and is undoubtedly the most popular bass guitar design throughout music history. The Precision Bass has long been the go bass guitar in studio and on stage, with its stripped back design, minimal controls and split coil pickup offering a huge amount of versatility for a variety of styles.
This 1962 Fender Precision Bass is a fantastic example of an early '60s Fender bass, which has had quite the life in the studio and on the road. This Precision Bass features an Ash body which has been stripped back to the natural wood, along with a Maple neck and early veneer Rosewood fingerboard, with the unbound, clay dot inlaid neck that was the standard for this model at the time. The body is fitted with the traditional split coil Precision bass pickup, with a punch and midrange that has made these basses the go to for pro musicians for over half a century. The celluloid tortoiseshell guard is original, although it has cracked and been repaired around the control knobs, as are the open gear, oval button tuners and spaghetti headstock decal and knurled chrome knobs.
This guitar has sustained a number of modifications over the years to keep it functioning as a touring instrument. The original finish has been stripped as mentioned previously, and the pots have been replaced, although the original are retained in the case. The original split coil pickup also appears to have been rewound, most obviously on the E & A string side. The neck date shows JUL 62 C. A second wooden thumb rest has also been added below the pickup cover plate.
This guitar has been given a full service and appraisal by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 3 year warranty. This guitar also includes a non original case.
