Introduced in 1942, the Gibson Southerner Jumbo was designed as a more deluxe version of the J-45. Alternately known as the Southern Jumbo or SJ, the model went through a number of spec changes throughout the '40s and '50s, with the natural top SJN model being introduced in 1954 and later rebranded to the Country Western. Throughout this time, the Southern Jumbo remained one of the companies flagship flat top guitars, and has been a favourite of collectors and players ever since.
This 1959 Gibson Southern Jumbo is by far one of the nicest examples of this model we have been lucky enough to have. The body is constructed from Sitka Spruce with Mahogany back and sides, with this example having an especially round and full bodied tone. Gibson acoustics of this period were often lighter built and lighter braced than later models, making them more resonant and responsive than the majority of the later square shoulder models, and although this guitar features the non scalloped bracing introduced on the model some time in 1955, we can confirm that it has in no way hindered its presence and resonance.
The neck features the typical '59 Gibson profile, with a moderately full feel that is incredibly comfortable to play. This Southern Jumbo also features the signature split parallelogram pearl inlays and pearloid crown headstock logo, along with the large pointed celluloid guard also introduced on this model in 1955.
This guitar is in very good condition for an instrument of its age, with plenty of lacquer checking and play wear that only comes with an instrument that has been well loved and well played over the course of its life. This guitar is internally and externally original, with the only repairs undertaken being the re-gluing of a number of braces by our own luthiers.
This guitar has been given a full service by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 3 year warranty.
