The 1950s marked a defining era for Gretsch, as the company established itself among the leading names in electric guitar design. Combining distinctive looks with innovative construction and features, these instruments set a standard of individuality that continues to influence guitar making today. The 6130 Roundup, introduced in the mid-1950s, stood out as one of Gretsch’s most characterful solid-body models, produced alongside the similar 6121 Chet Atkins single cut model.
This 1955 Gretsch 6130 Roundup represents the final year of production before the model was discontinued in favour of the 6121. This particular model has a serial number scratched on to the control plate cover that places it in 1955, although it features pots dating to 1953, and the lack of first fret inlay is also an indicator of an earlier production year. Built with a solid body featuring a knotty pine top, it carries the typical Western inspired detailing synonymous with Gretsch guitars at this time, including tooled leather body trim, celluloid inlays engraved with cows and cactus, and the signature “G” brand on the top. The guitar is fitted with dual DeArmond single coil pickups, a Melita bridge, and a distinctive 'belt buckle' tailpiece. Other features include a tortoise pickguard with engraved steer head, gold plated hardware, and the longhorn inlay on the headstock.
This guitar has sustained a number of repairs and modifications over the course of its life. The neck has previously been reset, and it has undergone heat treatment to correct the neck. Areas of binding have been repaired. The tuners and Melita bridge are both later. The top has been relacquered at some point. Some of the hardware has been re-plated. The pickup covers and bridge base have at some point been glued to the top. This guitar also includes its original tweed covered case.
This guitar has been given a full service by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 2 year warranty.
