Introduced in 1951, the Super 400 CES marked Gibson's entry into the world of high end electric archtops, combining the elegance and craftsmanship of the original Super 400 with the power and versatility of twin P90 pickups. As the flagship of Gibson's electric range, it retained the imposing 18 inch body, carved tonewoods and lavish appointments that had defined the acoustic model since the 1930s, while offering the projection and clarity demanded by professional players. Early examples are exceptionally scarce, with just nine Sunburst instruments shipped before the end of 1952, making this one of the first couple of handfuls of Super 400 CES guitars ever built.

This 1952 Gibson Super 400 CES is an outstanding early example, presented in excellent condition and remaining original throughout with the exception of a professional refret and a carefully executed overspray to the rear of the neck. The overspray extends from just beneath the headstock to the neck heel and appears to have been applied following a discreet heel crack repair. The repair is extremely difficult to detect under normal light, becoming visible only under black light inspection.

Elsewhere the guitar remains remarkably original, retaining its carved spruce top, carved figured maple back and sides, twin original P90 pickups and untouched wiring loom, although the potentiometer codes are obscured. The original finish has been lightly buffed on the back, resulting in a glossier appearance with some polishing swirl marks visible, while the top has retained a softer vintage patina. Accompanied by its original Lifton case and the original purchase receipt from Wurlitzer Music in Philadelphia, this is an exceptionally rare and highly collectible example of Gibson's first flagship electric archtop.

This guitar has been given a full service by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 2 year warranty.
