First introduced as a special order model in 1968 before joining the main Guild catalogue in 1974, the D-55 represented the brand’s flagship dreadnought, built to rival instruments like the Martin D-28. With a Sitka Spruce top and Indian Rosewood back and sides, it delivers a refined, balanced tone while retaining the rugged dependability Guild acoustics are known for—standing up confidently alongside Gibson and Martin guitars from the same era. This particular 1975 example was crafted at the Westerly, Rhode Island factory and remains in very good condition, showcasing the exceptional value often found in vintage Guild models.
Tonally, this D-55 offers sparkling clarity in the top end with strong projection, complemented by a tight, controlled low end that suits both strumming and fingerpicking. The neck features a comfortable profile that sits nicely between slim and chunky, with a smooth, played-in feel. Classic Guild aesthetics complete the package with open-gear tuners, an Ebony fingerboard, a nicely faded sunburst finish, and the iconic ‘Chesterfield’ headstock inlay.
This guitar is in very good cosmetic condition, with no more of the normal play wear or patina than you would expect from an instrument of its age. It is in all original condition, with no repair work to speak of. This 1975 Guild D-55 also includes a non original hard case.
This guitar has been given a full service by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 2 year warranty.
