Japanese made guitars of the 1970's 'lawsuit' era have gained a cult following over the years among players and collectors alike. Guitar manufacturers in Japan stole a march on their US based counterparts over the decade, offering guitars of equal (or in some cases superior) quality, while not taking a great deal of interest in copyright restrictions. As such, these 'lawsuit' era guitars are often an excellent way to get a vintage guitar of great quality without the price, or sometimes scarcity, of its Gibson or Fender counterpart.
This 1970s Ibanez 754 Jumbo is a perfect example, combining excellent tone, playability and build quality with more than a passing resemblance to a Gibson J-200. Featuring a fine-grained spruce top, this guitar delivers rich, resonant sound with great projection. The mahogany back and sides, enhanced by a glossy finish and multi-ply binding, provide exactly the kind of vintage, big body acoustic tone you would expect.
The Ibanez 754 Jumbo stands out in particular with a pair of large black pickguards inspired by the iconic Everly Brothers Gibson model. The sleek black open book headstock adds to the guitar’s vintage appeal, while other features include pearl inlaid Ibanez script headstock logo, star shaped pearloid position markers, and a rosewood bridge with adjustable saddle.
