The Fender Swinger, produced briefly in 1969, is one of Fender’s most unusual and short-lived models. Originally conceived to use up surplus parts from other short scale instruments, it featured a compact offset body, a short 22.5" scale neck, and a single pickup configuration. Marketed towards student players, the Swinger was never officially catalogued and was manufactured in very limited numbers, thought to be no more than 600, making it a rare curiosity today. The model has since gained cult appeal among collectors and players alike for its quirky design, distinctive tonal character, and unique place in Fender’s late-’60s history.
This 1969 Swinger is a great example of the model, finished in a nicely aged Lake Placid Blue factory colour. The neck is dated September '66 and features the 'A' stamp, indicating the slightly narrower nut width often found on these student models. It is internally and externally original and in good shape, with some lacquer checking and play wear, and yellowing the the clear coat giving the guitar a deep green hue. The original pots date to the 42nd week of 1966. There is evidence of previously removed stickers on both the headstock and rear of the body beneath the neck plate. This guitar also includes its original grey tolex short scale case.
