Guild guitars from the 1950s and 1960s are typically some of the most underappreciated guitars on the vintage market in our opinion, with Hoboken, NJ-made models producing some of the highest quality, most affordable and most distinctive vintage instruments on the market. This 1966 Guild S-200 Thunderbird is a fantastic example of arguably one of the most unique vintage guitars ever produced!
The S-200 was introduced alongside the S-100 Thunderbird and S-50 Jet-Star in 1963 as three revolutionary new designs in the solid body electric guitar market. This example from 1966 features the unusual asymmetrical offset body design that has become to eye catching over the years, seen in the hands of artists as diverse as Muddy Waters and Jefferson Airplane, along with a built in kick stand on the rear of the body. This guitar is fitted with a set of distinctive Guild 'Anti-Hum' P90 style pickups, offering excellent clarity and a surprising amount of warmth and roundness. Other features include the original open gear Waverley tuners, Maple capped headstock with Thunderbird truss rod cover, and a Hagstrom style vibrato tailpiece.
This guitar is in excellent condition, with only the most minor amounts of patina and ageing to the finish and metal parts. There is some minimal play wear to the rear of the neck and body. The electronics, finish and hardware are all original and in full working order, with the pots dating to the 52nd week of 1965. With fewer than 200 Thunderbirds thought to have been produced between 1963 & 1968, this is certainly a rare bird!
This guitar has been given a full service by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 3 year warranty. This guitar retains its original Guild hardcase.
