This 1962 Fender Precision Bass is a nice example of a pre-CBS slab board Fender bass. This Precision Bass features an Alder body which appears to have had a newer clear lacquer coat applied over the original Sunburst finish. The original pin holes beneath the bridge and scratch plate used to spray the body in the factory show evidence of clear lacquer build up around them, as does the edge of the Maple neck where it meets the Rosewood board, indicating the rear of the neck has also been over sprayed at some point in its life.
The Maple neck features a slab Rosewood fingerboard, with the unbound, clay-dot inlaid neck that was the standard for this model at the time, with an back ink date stamp of April 62 on the butt of the neck. The body is fitted with the traditional split coil Precision bass pickup, with the original brass base plate and foam intact, and the pickups appearing original and free of any rewinds. The celluloid tortoiseshell guard is original as are the open gear, oval button tuners, spaghetti headstock decal and bridge & pickup covers. The headstock decal does however appear to have suffered some damage over the years, which someone has attempted to repair by touching in the silver on some letters, rather than replacing the whole decal.
This guitar has sustained a couple of modifications over the years to keep it functioning as it should. It has benefitted from a refret and both pots have been replaced, along with the knurled chrome volume and tone control knobs. The bridge ground wire has also been replaced.
