The Valco-made Gretsch amps from the 1960s are among the more underrated vintage amplifiers available, delivering incredible tone and a classic vibe at a fraction of the cost of comparable Fender models. This 1961 Gretsch 6151 is a prime example, boasting a compact design and authentic vintage tube tone. Designed and built for Gretsch by Valco, the 6151 model is very close in design to the highly sought-after Supro 'Super' 1606 amp, though the Gretsch versions come with upgraded hardware, grill cloth, and tolex. Like its Supro counterparts, this Gretsch 6151 packs a punch for its size, capable of producing rich, overdriven crunch when pushed. The circuit is straightforward yet effective, built around a 12AX7, 6V6, and 5Y3 tube configuration. The 8" Jensen speaker delivers smooth, bright tones at lower volumes and responds exceptionally well when the amp is cranked, offering surprising headroom for such a compact unit.
This particular amp is in good condition, with obvious signs of wear to the tolex and grill cloth. The transformer and Jensen speaker appear original, with the pots dating to the 3rd week of 1961. The internal component appear largely original, although a newer three pin US power cord has been added. The amp operates on 110V US power, meaning and additional step down transformer will be required to power it in the UK.
