Introduced in 1934 as Gibson’s premier archtop model, the Super 400 quickly established itself as one of the most prestigious and recognisable jazz guitars of the 20th century. Priced at $400 upon release—an extravagant sum for the era—it represented the pinnacle of the company’s craftsmanship and design, influencing many of the large-bodied archtops that would follow. This 1949 example comes from Gibson’s highly sought-after pre-war period, regarded by many as the golden age for acoustic Super 400s.

Featuring an 18-inch body with the wider 13 5/8-inch upper bout introduced in 1936, this Super 400 is constructed from a carved spruce top and beautifully figured maple back and sides. The result is a rich, balanced tone that combines exceptional clarity with impressive projection. Deluxe appointments include split-diamond headstock inlays front and back, multi-ply binding throughout, split-block fingerboard markers, engraved Grover tuners, a brown pearloid pickguard, along with the rosewood board and white tuner buttons that became standard in the mid 1940's.

This guitar is in very condition, with the kind of play wear, lacquer checking and some minor repairs accrued over the years. The neck has been previously reset, ensuring many more years of correct playing action. This guitar also features a 'Made in USA' export stamp to the rear of the headstock, along with a logo for the Ray Hamerton music shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

This guitar has been given a full service by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 2 year warranty.
