Debuting in 1903, the Gibson L-3 is among the earliest archtop models produced by the company. Like the other L series models produced at the time, the L-3 went through a number of spec changes between 1903 and 1933 when the model was discontinued. This example from 1920 features the earlier round soundhole design, which would change to the oval style soundhole in 1927. Built with a carved Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides, the 13.5" body sized L-3 delivers a warm, balanced tone with impressive volume and rich bass response. Like its Gibson archtop counterparts, it boasts a strong midrange presence that cuts through beautifully. Its smooth, woody sound also shines in blues music, with the L-3 serving as the foundation for other 'L' series flat-top acoustics favored by Delta Blues legends like Robert Johnson in the 1930s. Additional details include the classic 'The Gibson' script headstock logo with floral inlay, multi layered wood inlaid soundhole rings, and the original pin trapeze bridge and open gear tuners.
