This 1920 Gibson A-3 mandolin is a fine example of the company’s early A style instruments, built during a period when Gibson’s carved top mandolins were firmly established among professional and amateur players alike. The model sat above the A-1 in the range and featured more decorative appointments while retaining the same distinctive teardrop body shape.
The instrument is constructed with a carved spruce top finished in a nicely aged white, paired with red stained birch back and sides. The symmetrical body features single binding to both the top and back, along with the characteristic oval soundhole.
The peghead follows the smaller non paddle style adopted in the later 1900s and is decorated with Gibson’s ornamental curlicue inlay. Other period correct details include the elevated pickguard, engraved tailpiece cover and original tuners.
There has been some work carried out on this mandolin over the years to keep it playing as it should, primarily with the binding. There are two areas of binding which have been repaired to the upper side of the back of the instrument, while the lower edge shows some signs of shrinkage. Otherwise, this banjo is free from repairs.
As with all our vintage instruments, this mandolin has been given a thorough service by the Vintage Instrument Workshop and is guaranteed for 2 years in line with our vintage instrument warranty.
