1989 Fender MIJ Stratocaster

Fender Japan’s late-1980s output from the world-famous FujiGen factory represents a high-water mark for vintage reissue instruments. Built during the sought-after "I" serial period, these mid-to-late '80s Japanese Fenders earned an extraordinary reputation among professional players for frequently outclassing their American counterparts.

This 1989 '57 Reissue Stratocaster sports a bold, custom-style "all-black" aesthetic reminiscent of David Gilmour's legendary Black Strat. With a replaced 3-ply black pickguard, matching black pickup covers, and black control knobs. Powered by a trio of vintage-voiced Japanese single-coil pickups, it delivers pure pre-CBS Stratocaster character.

The classic small headstock features the spaghetti Fender logo and is fitted with original Kluson-style open-gear tuners, while the body is anchored by a traditional six-saddle vintage synchronised tremolo system.

As seen in the photos, this 1989 example is in wonderful, honest vintage condition. Having aged naturally over 37 years, the black finish retains a deep shine with subtle surface swirling, light play wear, and small handling marks consistent with a carefully played instrument. The frets are in great shape with plenty of height left, the neck is straight, and the hardware has developed a soft, attractive nickel patina. Adding a touch of UK guitar heritage, the back of the headstock still bears its original dealer sticker from the famed Machinehead Music.
