First introduced in 1931, the Martin D-28 has become one of the defining acoustic guitar designs, prized for its projection, balance and unmistakable dreadnought sound. This 1976 example offers a great opportunity to own a vintage D-28, provided you can look past the refinished body. The clear lacquer refinish has been carried out well, leaving the guitar with a clean look for a vintage acoustic, and could do with some miles putting on it, and it doesn't sound as though the additional finish has had any noticeable effect on its tone.
Built with a solid Sitka spruce top and solid East Indian rosewood back and sides, the D-28 delivers exactly the sort of tone you'd hope for. It's beautifully balanced, with a responsive low end that has plenty of depth without becoming boomy, alongside a lovely sparkle in the upper register. The mahogany neck has the comfortable profile typical of Martin guitars from this period, making it easy to move around the fingerboard.
The guitar has been fully refinished in clear lacquer, with the headstock finish remaining original. There has been a repaired pickguard crack, along with minor repairs to the braces. The saddle and bridge pins have been replaced, but otherwise the instrument remains original. It is supplied with its original Martin blue hard case.
This guitar has been given a full service by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 2 year warranty.
