1970 Gibson J-160E

Introduced in 1954, the Gibson J 160E was one of the company's first production acoustic electric guitars and remains one of its most recognisable models thanks to its close association with John Lennon and George Harrison during the early years of The Beatles. Unlike Gibson's traditional flat tops, the J 160E was designed with amplified performance in mind, combining familiar dreadnought styling with a magnetic pickup to create a guitar equally suited to the stage and studio.

This 1970 Gibson J 160E is a fine example of the square shoulder version introduced at the turn of the decade. Constructed with a three ply laminated spruce top and laminated back, it retains the distinctive uncovered P90 pickup mounted at the end of the fingerboard, with volume and tone controls positioned on the soundboard. The ladder braced construction gives the guitar a character all of its own, producing a bright, woody acoustic voice that transforms into the unmistakable jangly, articulate sound for which the J 160E has become so well known when plugged in. Features include the later style adjustable bridge with smaller saddle adjustment screws introduced during the late 1960's, along with the teardrop style pickguard found during this time. 

This guitar is in very good condition for an instrument of its age, and is internally and externally original. There is some signs of ageing and patina to the finish, but largely the guitar shows fairly minimal play wear. Also included is a non original case. 

This guitar has been given a full service by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 2 year warranty.
