Gibson's Skylark lap steels offer a fascinating glimpse into the company's mid century electric instrument range, and this 1958 example has some particularly interesting features. The body is made from solid slab African Black Limba, marketed by Gibson as Korina, the same distinctive timber associated with the legendary Flying V and Explorer models of 1958 and 1959.
The lapsteel is fitted with a single slanted Melody Maker style single coil pickup, giving it a clear, warm and cutting tone that works particularly well for slide playing. Volume and tone controls are mounted on a nickel plated control plate, with the black bonnet knobs used by Gibson at the time, while the raised silver Gibson headstock logo and single line Kluson Deluxe tuners with black buttons add to its distinctive late 1950s styling.
This guitar retains its original hardware, including the control knobs, and the electronics also appear to be original. It is in very good condition for its age and comes with a non original gig bag.
As with all our vintage instruments, this Gibson Skylark has been given a full service by the Vintage Instrument Workshop and includes a 2 year warranty.
