With a lower scale length of 22 1/2" and a more understated look, the Fender Duo Sonic was the company's official twin pickup student guitar when it was first released in 1956 alongside the single pickup Musicmaster model. Many Fender models had specification changes in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The Duo Sonic was relaunched in 1964 in a revised configuration that matched the new Mustang model, thus turning it into a hard tail version of the Mustang, with the same pickups, switching design, headstock, and body shape. Over the years, the Fender Duo Sonic has gained popularity due to its shorter scale design and distinctive pickup setup, making it a reasonably priced option for those interested in purchasing vintage guitars from Fender's heyday.
This 1964 Duo Sonic is a wonderful example that is in all original condition. This guitar features a 24" scale maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard along with a slab Alder body. Its neck date is November 1964, with the 'A' mark indicating that it has the narrower nut width found on a lot of these student models. The original pots are from the 50th week of 1964, and the original grey bottom pickups are present and correct. Elsewhere, the celluloid pickguard, 'F' stamped tuners, threaded saddle top loading bridge, and all other hardware are original and fully functioning.
The original white lacquer finish shows plenty of lacquer checking and play wear around the lower edges, but is in generally very good condition. This guitar also includes its original case.
As with all vintage instruments, this 1964 Fender Duo Sonic has been given a full service and appraisal by the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 3 year warranty.
