It's a big, grand guitar, with a look and feel that stays remarkably faithful to the original design.

The neck is relatively shallow in depth, but feels a little wider than you might expect from a modern Gibson acoustic. It naturally lends itself to fingerstyle playing and bluegrass picking, although once you're accustomed to the dimensions, it becomes a very capable all rounder. Big open chords ring out beautifully, with a dry, resonant character that avoids becoming too boomy or overly bright, while the low end has a lovely roundness to it. The hand scalloped X bracing does a great job of giving the guitar its own voice, with plenty of presence and warmth without losing that dry, woody quality associated with the older Gibson flat tops. No doubt the thermally aged Adirondack Spruce to is also a great contributing factor to the 'old soul' this guitar seems to have.

Originally introduced in 1939, the J-55 was one of Gibson's top tier pre war acoustics, sitting alongside the Super Jumbo and Advanced Jumbo models. With its mahogany back and sides, Adirondack spruce top and distinctive moustache bridge, it offered a different take on the large bodied acoustic, with a character all of its own. Production was relatively short lived, with only a few hundred examples believed to have been made before the model was discontinued in 1942.

This example is in exceptionally clean condition, with no repairs to speak of, and remains entirely original. It has all the visual appeal of the period, from the faded vintage sunburst finish and firestripe pickguard to the vintage script Gibson headstock logo. For anyone who appreciates the sound and feel of a pre war Gibson but would prefer something in clean, ready to play condition, this is a particularly appealing reissue. It captures the playing experience of the era remarkably well, while leaving plenty of room for its next owner to put their own character into it.

This guitar has been given a full service and appraisal by our luthiers at the Vintage Instrument Workshop, and includes a 2 year warranty.
