Originally launched as Fender’s premier student model in the mid '60s, the Mustang quickly earned a reputation among players of all genres thanks to its comfortable short-scale feel and distinct sound, made possible by the unique pickup phase switching system exclusive to this model.

This 1973 example hails from the tail end of the later 'Competition' series produced between 1969 and 1973, featuring striking finishes in Orange, Red, and Blue (listed as 'Burgundy' in Fender’s catalog), each adorned with a signature racing stripe. This particular guitar sports the Blue / Burgundy finish, although the lacquer clear coat has yellowed heavily over time, giving this guitar an aqua green tint with plenty of checking and patina. The neck has a comfortable slim profile, with rosewood board and larger CBS era headstock, along with the 'F' stamped tuners which are correct for the period.

The guitar is in very good condition overall, with plenty of lacquer checking, and a small ding to the finish near the upper side of the pickguard on the front of the body. There is a small area of discolouration to the rear of the body at the base, presumably from a reaction with a strap while in storage at some point. The original pickups date to 1970, while the two original pots date to the 29th week of 1973 (137 7329) This guitar also comes complete with its original short scale case.
