Introduced in 1959 as Fender’s flagship model, the Jazzmaster quickly found favour in the surf scene of the early ’60s and later became a staple of alternative music in the ’80s. This 1965 Fender Jazzmaster is a fantastic example of a player grade vintage Fender offset, clearly having had quite a life, but with plenty more years in the tank.
The first thing to note is that the original three-tone sunburst finish has been stripped at some point in its life, with the original Alder body featuring plenty of wear and tear accrued over the years. Overall condition is good, with the only other changes being a replacement pickguard and newer headstock decal, new nut, a newer set of repro Kluson double line tuners, changed neck plate, a changed output ground wire and newer foam beneath the pickups.
The body is fitted with original grey bobbin Jazzmaster pickups, and the original pots date to the 15th and 30th weeks of 1965. Although at some point in its life, the body has been routed to fit a middle pickup.
The maple neck features an bound rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays, a detail specific to Jazzmasters produced from late 1965 to mid-1966. All other hardware and wiring appears original and correct for the period. The neck has a comfortable mid-’60s profile—slim, but not too slight—offering smooth playability throughout, with plenty of play wear to the rear. This guitar also includes a non original hard case.
