The WEM Sapphire Bass is a distinctive short-scale electric bass produced in the 1960s by Watkins Electric Music, one of the most influential British music companies of the post-war era. Co-founded by Charlie and Reg Watkins in 1949, the company began as a record shop in London before evolving into a pioneering force in British amplification and effects. By the late 1950s, Watkins had established itself as one of the top three names in the UK music trade, known especially for its groundbreaking Copicat tape echo unit and amplifier designs.

The Sapphire Bass reflects the company’s commitment to innovation. Featuring a solid Alder body with a sunburst finish, two single-coil pickups, and a zero fret, the instrument delivers a full yet articulate voice suited to classic '60s tones, and certainly looks the part with its split pickguard layout.
